Book Review: Signs of Life: Surviving Katrina. (Neubie's Photo Debut Included)

When people feel politically powerless and frustrated what do they do?  They take out a can of spray paint and let the world know how they feel.  This is just what happened in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Many of the photographs are very humorous.



All the photographs in the book were donated by the photographers and proceeds from the book are donated to rel.  The authors found my photograph on flickr.com and I sent them a hi-res version for inclusion in the book.  There is an exhibition of photographs from Signs of Life.

"SIGNS OF LIFE ART FEATURED AT JERSEY CITY ART WALK
Beginning Friday, October 6, 2006 through Sunday, October 22, 2006, the Pro Arts venue, Art Across the Plaza, on Montgomery Street opposite Jersey City, City Hall will proudly display large format photographs from the recently published book, Signs of Life: Surviving Katrina. This moving collection of photographs documents the hand-made signs that appeared amid the devastation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast."

A reception will be held on October 18th from 6-8pm at Bar Majestic  at 275 Grove Street in Jersey City, NJ.

Signs of Life was compiled by Eric Harvey Brown and Lori Baker, New York-based photographers and writers who volunteered in the Gulf Coast after the hurricane, SIGNS OF LIFE shows not only the traces of the violence of the storm, but also that much devastation remains one year later. The pictures in SIGNS OF LIFE come from more than forty photographers--including local residents, relief volunteers, and those just passing through.
